I had the pleasure to be at Anfield last night in the main stand near the Kop (just past that post in the photo!) so the sight of Steven Gerrard’s second goal in the second half was heavenly, especially as it came so close to the restart and at that point I think everyone knew the quarter finals of the Champions League were calling…
It wasn’t just the goal that was fantastic; it was the build up of quick passes and real attacking agression that was so good to see continuously flowing throughout the match.
At last I think that performance underlines Liverpool’s consitantancy over the last 5 years and Benitez can now look forward to taking the confidence on to Old Trafford at the weekend and revitalise the title chase once again. We’ve simply got to win and upset the so called ‘rythm’ United seem to have slipped into (1 - 0 wins).
I almost forgot to mention, it was remarkable to see Fernando Torres live on the pitch, his movement and passing is complete quality and he deserved maybe a couple more goals based on his performance last night…

Benitez waits on Benayoun and Torres for Liverpool v Real Madrid
The fitness of Yossi Benayoun and Fernando Torres is still in doubt with just 24 hours to go until the last 16 Champions league match against Real Madrid tomorrow night at Anfield.
Benitez said of the two players;
“Yossi has a hamstring problem and we will know more after the scan.”
“Fernando is training but not in the full sessions. We are doing special sessions with specific work with some players. Hopefully he can train today and then we will see.
“It depends on his reaction after the session and then again tomorrow. I think he can be part of the squad and maybe he can play some minutes, but I can’t guarantee how much.”
Lets pray they both make it back for a crucial match that is the start of a defining series of games that could make or break the Liverpool FC season.

Champions league - Atletico Madrid 1 - 1 Liverpool
Liverpool had to settle for a draw after Simao Sabrosa’s late equaliser rescued a point for Atletico Madrid.
Robbie Keane’s cool finish from a suspiciously offside position gave the visitors the lead in the 14th minute.
Liverpool’s Yossi Benayoun and Atletico’s Maniche then both had goals contentiously ruled out for offside after the break.

Tuesday’s fantastic performance against Marseille sets us up nicely for a commanding position in Group D.
Of course it was the Stevie Gerrard show but he was outstanding yet again and for once in a while got a couple of goals as his reward. So many games you see him battling away and keeping the team moving with no reward - I thought it was fair that Gerrard scored a few, especially as we came out with an away win in europe.
I’m sure you don’t need reminding about Gerrard’s amazing strike from Kuyt’s cut back; Gerrard curled in a 22 yarder right across goal into the top left corner leaving Mandanda stranded!
After the game Benitez said; “Gerrard’s first goal was amazing. A fantastic goal.
“We played on the counter-attack and it could have been better but three points is a massive result for us.
“They have a good mentality. We knew it could be difficult and it was. The team as a whole was very good in defence.”
Of course it wasn’t just a one man show, Gerrard go the goals but Reina was in top form saving twice in the last 10 minutes. A great all round team performance - perhaps that’s why we’re second in the league at the moment?! Early days I know but still very, very nice to come out on top of United and get an away European win - all in the same week!!
